Safe Web Browsing

With more and more people moving to online transactions, web security has become vitally important. We are regularly asked about the safety and security of entering personal information online. Here are some tips that you might find helpful:
  1. When entering data into a site, make sure that the website is using encryption. One way to verify this is by looking in the address bar and make sure the web address begins with “https://” as opposed to “http:” alone. The ‘s’ means the site is secure. Another way to tell if a website is using encryption is to look for a gold padlock in the bottom right hand corner of Internet Explorer.

  2. Make sure you regularly run anti-virus and anti-spyware scans. It is not uncommon for these types of programs to install themselves on your local system and wait for you to type in your personal information and steal it. Please see the links below for a few recommendations.

  3. Avoid common internet deceptions, such as “phishing.” Phishing is when a predator will send an official looking e-mail, claiming there’s a problem with your account. You’re then asked to click on a link within the e-mail so they can “fix” the problem. However, the link leads you to a false version of the real site. Once you enter your personal information, the predators have captured what they are looking. If you receive a suspicious looking e-mail, never click on the embedded links. Instead, go to the site directly or call the company in question to see if there’s a problem.
